Blumenthal Statement on Joint Resolution of Disapproval Votes

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] - U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal released the following statement following votes on two Joint Resolutions of Disapproval (JRD) to block the transfer of arms to Israel:

"Our President's purposeless war in Iran is a growing disaster: costing thousands of lives, tens of billions of dollars, and triggering a global energy and economic crisis. Israel's role in the conflict raises profound questions about the judgment of Prime Minister Netanyahu's government and whether its decisions serve the shared security interests of both our nations.

Equally troubling is the Israeli government's continued failure to prevent and prosecute illegal settler violence and settlement expansion in the West Bank. These actions inflame the region, undermine any prospect for a negotiated peace, and implicate the United States in conduct that violates international law and our own foreign policy.

The current resolution is not the solution or vehicle to address these problems. I continue to be critical of this Israeli government's conduct - but our President is responsible for this reckless and destructive war. Israel is an ally currently under attack. Leaving it vulnerable by rescinding already appropriated arms and equipment is a step I cannot support."
