-1,633 Elevator Floods Reported Over Four Years… Launching Detection Tech to Cut Damage-
Hyundai Elevator is stepping up efforts to prevent elevator flooding damage during the heavy rains of summer. This initiative is in partnership with the Ministry of the Interior and Safety(MOIS)which conducted a focused inspection of 225 elevators affected by flooding last year.
To prepare for the monsoon season, Hyundai Elevator will carry out nationwide intensive inspections of elevator maintenance and management sites, focusing on flood and leak prevention and response guidance. Simultaneously, starting in August, it will launch a promotion featuring a flood detection system package aimed at minimizing safety risks and damage to facilities.
From 2021 to 2024, there were 1,633 elevator flooding incidents reported in Korea, including cases of system failure due to short circuits and passengers being trapped inside, according to MOIS. In August 2023, the country saw its first fatality caused by elevator flooding.
To address this growing concern, Hyundai Elevator introduced a pit-level flood detection system last year and is officially beginning commercial distribution this year. The device detects water ingress and promptly shifts the elevator car to a middle floor, reducing the likelihood of injury and mechanical damage.
"In light of the rising frequency of elevator flooding due to heavy summer rainfall, early detection has become more critical than ever," said a Hyundai Elevator representative. "To safeguard our passengers, we are launching a promotional campaign for our flood detection system."
In 2023, the company also distributed safety guidelines across the nation, highlighting preventive measures for both flooding and high temperatures, underscoring its continued commitment to safe elevator use.
