The Shoalhaven welcomed 74 new citizens from 19 different countries at a special citizenship ceremony in Ulladulla today, coinciding with national Refugee Week.
Refugee Week in Australia coincides with World Refugee Day on 20 June and provides an opportunity to reflect on the nation's long history of resettling refugees while recognising the many contributions they make to Australian society.
Mayor Patricia White said hosting Shoalhaven's citizenship ceremony in Refugee Week made the celebration even more meaningful for those in attendance.
"Australia is a stronger, more vibrant nation because of the contributions of people from refugee backgrounds," Cr White said.
"Refugees have helped shape the Shoalhaven, enriching our community through their resilience, talent and determination to build new lives," she said.
"It's always an honour to preside over Shoalhaven's citizenship ceremonies, and today's celebration was especially significant as we marked Refugee Week."
The 74 new Australian citizens hailed from countries including Nepal, Iraq, the United States, Thailand, New Zealand, India, the Philippines, Brazil, South Africa, the United Kingdom, Italy, Denmark, China, Pakistan, Spain, Cambodia, Grenada, Indonesia and Scotland. Additionally, there were individuals who were stateless.
The theme for Refugee Week 2026 is 'One Million Stories' which acknowledges that in November last year, Australia granted its one millionth refugee and humanitarian visa since humanitarian intake began in 1947. Following World War II, Australia responded to an international call, offering a future to people who had nowhere to call home. Since this first intake under the Displaced Persons Scheme, Australia has welcomed people from all parts of the world.
