Mexico Calls on Regional Governments to Work Together on Migration
  • Foreign Secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente said that the nations of the region must be prepared to address the new challenges in human mobility by working together
  • The joint declaration outlining common principles on migration was agreed upon by all participating countries

Following a proposal by President Claudia Sheinbaum and Honduras President Xiomara Castro, ministers, vice ministers, and delegation heads from across the region agreed today to present a unified approach to migration as they concluded a meeting on human mobility along the northern migration corridor.

During the meeting organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente said that, due to the upcoming changes in one of the hemisphere's primary destination countries for migration, the nations of the region must be ready to address the new challenges together, adhering to international law, to serve all our communities.

The meeting at the Foreign Ministry brought together representatives from Belize, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Guatemala, Haiti, Venezuela, and Honduras-which currently holds the pro tempore presidency of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC). Both in-person and online attendees acknowledged President Claudia Sheinbaum's leadership and pledged to enhance their management of migration.

Secretary de la Fuente said, "Migration should not be viewed as a problem, but as an extraordinarily complex issue. From a human rights standpoint, we are creating a regional model that addresses the various phases and dimensions of migration. This model represents an ongoing collective and dynamic process that is both adaptable and open to improvement."

The sessions were chaired by Mexico's Foreign Secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente, Honduras' Secretary of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Eduardo Enrique Reina, and Undersecretary for Latin America and the Caribbean Raquel Serur. The Foreign Ministers participating virtually included Luis Gilberto Murillo of Colombia, Bruno Rodríguez of Cuba, Carlos Ramiro Martínez of Guatemala, Jean-Victor Harvel of Haiti, and Yvan Gil of Venezuela. Vice Ministers attending in a hybrid format included Amalia Mai of Belize, Márcia Loureiro of Brazil, Alejandro Solano of Costa Rica, and Delegation Head Rosa Delmy Cañas of El Salvador.

The meeting resulted in a joint declaration.
