For Immediate Release: August 28, 2026
The City of Alexandria has mailed 2026 Business Personal Property Tax Bills to all businesses that were operating in the City as of January 1, 2026. Business owners who haven't received a business personal property tax bill by September 1 should contact Business Tax at [email protected] or 703.746.4800 or the City's Treasury Division at [email protected] or 703.746.4800. Taxpayers who have a change of address not previously reported should contact Business Tax so a bill can be provided before the October 5, 2026 due date.
Businesses that receive a bill based on a statutory assessment should complete the 2026 Business Personal Property Tax Return and provide an itemized asset listing to receive a revised bill. Businesses that relocated within the City but haven't reported this change should complete an interdepartmental form for the new location. Businesses that moved out of the City or ceased doing business in the City should complete the cessation of business form for the applicable calendar year. All of these forms are available at alexandriava.gov/BusinessTax.
Business Personal Property Tax payments are due Monday, October 5. Any business owner wishing to pay by mail should write the account number on their check or money order and mail it with the payment coupon to City of Alexandria Business Personal Property, P.O. Box 34901, Alexandria, VA 22334-0901. For information on other payment options, including payment by eCheck, the City Hall drop box, or credit/debit card online, please visit alexandriava.gov/Payments. Returned checks and online payments are subject to a $35 fee.
Late payment penalty and interest will be assessed on all business personal property tax accounts that are not paid by the due date. Late payment penalty of 10% of the tax plus late filing penalty, or $10, whichever is greater will be assessed if not paid by October 5, 2026. An additional 15% penalty will be assessed (for a total penalty of 25%, or $10, whichever is greater) if paid after November 4, 2026. Interest accrues at an annual rate of 10% the first year and 5% each year thereafter.
The Finance Department is open to assist taxpayers during normal business hours, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. However, business owners are encouraged to use one of the City's convenient and contact-free payment options, which are available 24 hours per day.
