World Heritage-listed Dutch Canal Quay Wall Renovation Project Second Construction Contract Signed for Commercial Phase

G-Kracht B.V., a joint venture company established by Giken Europe B.V, a group company of GIKEN LTD., together with Dutch construction companies Gebr. De Koning B.V. and Van Gelder B.V., has signed a construction contract with the City of Amsterdam in December 2025 for the second project in the commercial phase of the Innovation Partnership Quay Wall G-kracht B.V. by using new technology for renovating the quay walls of the World Heritage-listed Canal Ring Area of Amsterdam.

This construction work follows the success of the first project in the commercial phase*, in which press-in construction was carried out from May to September 2025. G-Kracht B.V. is scheduled to receive contract orders for a total of 3.3 km by 2032 under the commercial phase, with press-in construction scheduled to start in August 2026 for a section 115.5 m long. The site is along a beautiful canal lined by historic, cultural heritage buildings and a key tourist spot visited each year by more than a million visitors via sightseeing cruises. The technologies of GIKEN allow temporary work-free construction while limiting vibrations and noise, protecting the tourism industry by minimising impact on the surrounding environment and not obstructing waterway traffic during construction. Furthermore, similar to the first phase, fully electrified construction machines and such will be used to achieve zero CO2 emissions at the site.

This project is planned to eventually renovate sections spanning 200 km. There is also increasing demand for renovation of quay walls, waterways, and such at various other locations in the Netherlands, and the technologies of GIKEN have already been adopted for several renovation plans. Going forwards, GIKEN will establish a sustainable infrastructure renewal model that allows urban functions to be reinforced using zero-emission press-in construction while protecting the regional economy in Europe, which is at the forefront of decarbonisation, and implement this model worldwide.

■Construction Details

Site before the start of construction

The electric tubular pile rotary cutting press-in machine GYRO PILER™ GRV0611e and the temporary work-free GRB System™, where machinery operates on top of already installed piles, will be used to press in 154 tubular piles, each approximately 14 m in length and 508 mm in diameter. Renovation will be carried out for a section of quay walls spanning 115.5 m.

■Commercial Phase Schedule

During this phase, renovation work covering a total of 3.3 km is planned through 2032, and the group responsible for development will be awarded the contract for the work using the innovative technology developed for the project. G-Kracht B.V., having demonstrated the superiority of the press-in technology and successfully completed the pilot work, has secured contract orders for a total of 1.3 km through 2028. Following this, contracts will be renewed based on construction performance, with an additional 2 km section expected between 2028 and 2032.

■Project Schedule

The Gyropress Method™ and GRB System™ are expected to be adopted as one of the standard construction methods for this project after the commercial phase. Due to their overwhelming superiority compared to other construction methods, GIKEN anticipates an increase in their usage by other companies. This expansion of our technology by other companies and their sites is expected to accelerate the adoption of the construction methods, along with increased sales and rentals of our press-in machines and system equipment. With the need for renovations spanning 200 km in this project, we anticipate sustained revenue generation over the long term.
