Bridge damage repair project has begun in Cheyenne and will transition to Rawlins

CHEYENNE, Wyo. - On Monday, August 24, crews from the Wyoming Department of Transportation and S&S Builders began repair work on bridge damage on Interstate 80.

The construction work is taking place on I-80 eastbound at reference marker 362.65 in Cheyenne. The project will involve replacement of structural steel, heat straightening, painting, and bridge rail repair.

A lane closure and 25-foot width restriction will be in place for the duration of the work. Morrie Avenue will also be closed to allow crews to work underneath the bridge structure. A signed detour will be in place.

Once the work in Cheyenne is completed, crews will move to Rawlins to repair the bridge structure at Exit 211 on I-80 that carries Spruce Street. The work will take place on I-80 eastbound at reference marker 211.75. A lane closure will be in place, but a width restriction has not been established at this time. Work at this location will include replacement of structural steel and installation of new bolts.

Repair work on the bridge structure at Exit 214 in Rawlins, which carries South Higley Boulevard, is scheduled for bid letting in October. This will be a separate contracted project. The two bridge structures mentioned earlier sustained damage before the Exit 214 bridge was struck; therefore, their repairs were scheduled before the Exit 214 bridge's repairs. Updates will be provided once scheduling is finalized for the repairs at Exit 214.

Motorists are encouraged to obey all posted signs, flaggers, and other traffic control devices, and avoid distractions such as cell phones while driving through work zones.

The project is anticipated to be completed by Oct. 31, 2026. All WYDOT project scheduling is subject to change, including due to adverse weather or material availability.
