France Vows New Cooperation Treaty with Morocco, Focus on Parliament - Officials

Friday 30 January 2026
France is determined to establish a new bilateral treaty with Morocc, placing strong emphasis on parliamentary cooperation to strengthen the existing ties, French Senate President Mr. Gérard Larcher and National Assembly President Mrs. Yaël Braun-Pivet said Friday in Rabat.

In a statement to the press following their meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr. Nasser Bourita, the two French officials emphasized that France and Morocco are edging closer to a new bilateral treaty, similar to the Treaty of Aachen between France and Germany and the Quirinal Treaty between France and Italy.

In this context, the President of the Senate noted that this new treaty "underway" between Morocco and France is part of a long-term perspective.

Larcher praised Morocco's commitment on the international stage, particularly to peace in the Middle East and stability in the Sahel, believing that Paris and Rabat have "common messages to convey" to the European Union, the European Parliament, and national parliaments.

For her part, the President of the French National Assembly said the meeting with Moroccan Foreign Minister Mr. Nasser Bourita marked the culmination of a visit reflecting both countries' shared willingness to looking ahead.

"This treaty will bind France and Morocco in a stronger cooperation than ever before, and we hope that it will have a strong parliamentary dimension," she said, adding that the two countries share not only "common interests" but also "common ambitions" in a rapidly changing world.

"We must therefore strongly reaffirm who our allies and friends are. In Africa, Morocco is one of the countries with which France wishes to collaborate," she insisted.
