Aqaba, Jordan - October 1-2, 2025 - Over 1,500 volunteers came together in Aqaba for the EU Beach Clean Up 2025, a two-day community event that turned environmental action into a celebration.
The campaign was held under the patronage of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) and organized by the EU Delegation to Jordan with partners including the Interreg NEXT MED Programme, Oxfam Jordan, and the Zaha Cultural Center. In total, 1,500 participants joined the campaign, showing the strong local commitment to keeping Aqaba's beaches clean.
Activities included beach and marine clean-ups, recycling workshops, and interactive awareness initiatives, collecting approximately 40 kg of marine debris and over 35,000 cigarette butts, demonstrating strong local participation and environmental responsibility.
The event was supported by H.E. Pierre-Christophe Chatzisavas, the Ambassador of the European Union, and Dr. Nedal Al-Ouran, ASEZA Commissioner for Environment and Public Safety. Their presence highlighted the EU - Jordan commitment to cleaner coasts and stronger communities.
This year's clean-up coincided with the 35th anniversary of Interreg Cooperation Day, making Aqaba part of a global movement for greener, bluer futures.
The campaign wrapped up at Aqaba Castle, emphasising the importance of collective action for environmental protection and reinforcing Aqaba as a model for sustainability and natural resource preservation.
