U.S. Department of Education Senior Advisor for Civic Education Katie Gorka Highlights Civics Education at “History Rocks!” Event in Maine

May 28, 2026

WINTHROP, ME - Today, U.S. Department of Education Senior Advisor for Civic Education Katie Gorka visited Winthrop High School as part of the Department of Education's national History Rocks!Trail to Independence Tour, in celebration of America's upcoming 250th birthday. The Tour aims to strengthen civic literacy by helping students personally connect with America's founding principles.

Students explored themes of civic engagement, patriotism, and the shared responsibility of citizenship, participating in interactive games designed to deepen their understanding of American history and civics and the important role Maine has played in our nation's history.

"Maine has a way of making certain American values feel unmistakably real, independence, endurance, and a respect for the work it takes to build a life on your own terms," said U.S. Department of Education Senior Advisor for Civic Education Katie Gorka. "History Rocks! helps students connect that spirit to the larger American story and understand why places like Maine have always mattered to the character of the country."
