William Martin Miller Receives the Purple Heart and Additional Military Honors in Long-Overdue Recognition of His Sacrifice During the Vietnam War
BUFFALO, N.Y. - Congressman Tim Kennedy (NY-26) presented military honors to Buffalo veteran William Martin Miller during a ceremony held in Buffalo, NY. Surrounded by family and loved ones, Miller, an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, received the Purple Heart along with several additional service medals, a commemorative certificate, and an American flag that had flown over the U.S. Capitol in recognition of his sacrifice and service to our nation.
"As Americans, we owe our veterans a debt that can never truly be repaid, only honored through our gratitude, respect, and commitment to never forget the sacrifices they made for our country," said Congressman Kennedy. "One of the greatest privileges of serving in Congress is having the opportunity to recognize the brave men and women who answered the call to defend our nation. On behalf of a grateful community and nation, thank you, William M. Miller, for your service to the United States of America."
A native of Buffalo, Miller was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1967 and deployed to Vietnam with the 196th Light Infantry Brigade of the 23rd "Americal" Division. While serving near Chu Lai and Da Nang, he first drove supply trucks along the dangerous Highway 1 before transferring to an artillery unit. During an enemy attack on his unit's bunker, Miller sustained five severe combat wounds and was medically evacuated to Walter Reed Hospital, where he endured a grueling nine-month recovery. Miller still carries shrapnel in his back today. Despite the extent of his injuries and sacrifice, he had never formally received the Purple Heart until now.
In addition to the Purple Heart, Congressman Kennedy presented Miller with the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon with Device (1960), and the Expert Badge with Rifle Bar. Miller was also formally entered into the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor, ensuring his bravery and sacrifice will be remembered for generations to come.
Veterans and their families who are seeking the military medals they have earned are urged to contact Congressman Kennedy's office at 716-852-3501.
