Faces of NLU: Qin Cai

After spending over a decade as a Chinese language teacher and curriculum leader in international schools across Asia, Qin Cai embarked on a bold new adventure at Kendall College at National Louis University, where she's pursuing her passion for culinary arts and cultural education.

"The decision to change my career after 11 years of building a career in education was not an easy one," Qin reflects. Moving to Chicago - her first time living in the United States - presented its own challenges, including adapting to the "dark, cold, brutal winter." Yet, supported by her fiancé and drawn by Kendall College's stellar reputation in Chicago's diverse culinary scene, she took the leap.

Qin's vision extends beyond the kitchen. As she describes her career goal in one word - "Educator" - it becomes clear that she sees food as a bridge between cultures. "I am planning to build a career that combines the culinary arts and cultural education," she explains, envisioning either a career in food writing or creating a cultural center where people can learn about different cuisines and the diverse cultures behind them.

Her favorite experience at NLU perfectly illustrates this fusion of food and cultural exchange. During an international breakfast session, Chef Meyer entrusted her with leading an Asian-themed breakfast preparation. "It was amazing to see how my classmates could make something they never made or even seen before like a pro!" she shares enthusiastically. "I was so happy to share my food and culture with my fellow culinary schoolmates and chefs."

The support of her instructors has been instrumental in her journey. From Chef Ron's patient guidance and unique humor to Chef Marianne's helpfulness in baking foundations, each instructor has contributed differently to her growth. The sense of community at NLU has made her transition smoother, leading her to describe the university in one word: "Community."

As an international student on a new path, Qin has embraced every opportunity to connect with Chicago's diverse neighborhoods. She's even found time to engage in voluntary work in Chinatown, supported by her International Opportunity Scholarship.

To fellow international students, Qin offers wisdom gained from her own experience: "There are so many opportunities out there if you are willing to learn and explore. Be brave and open-minded, the world will open for us."
