The Columbia High School football team in Huntsville, Alabama, has officially ended its 101-game losing streak, the longest in high school football history.
The victory comes nearly a year after the team's story was featured in "All the Reasons Not to Quit," a Gatorade x NFL Films docuseries that followed the team's journey to turn its program around.
Last fall, Gatorade began its support for the school's football program when experts from the Gatorade Sports Science Institute (GSSI) worked with the team to provide sweat testing, hydration and nutrition education informed by each athlete's needs. The team also received Gatorade product and equipment to help athletes stay fueled and hydrated during training and competition, mentorship from Gatorade roster athlete Aidan Hutchinson, and additional resources to support the program.
While Columbia didn't secure a win during the 2025 season, the team showed signs of progress, with increasingly competitive performances and growing momentum - including a game against East Lawrence, where they lost by just four points and had their highest offensive output of the year.
As the team prepared for the 2026 season, Gatorade's support didn't waver. For Head Coach Sammie Coates, that continued commitment left a lasting impression.
"Gatorade's investment in our team, from the science and education to the belief they showed in these young men, made a genuine difference, not only on the field, but in the locker room and in the classroom," said Coates. "These kids earned this victory through sweat and sacrifice, and having a brand like Gatorade support them in this way, it means everything."
For 41 years, GSSI has been focused on hydration science research and education.
"We're proud to have had the opportunity to support the Columbia High School football team on the road to this historic win, said Kevin Luhrs, associate principal scientist at the Gatorade Sports Science Institute. "Through sweat testing and education on their hydration and fueling needs, these student-athletes were able to develop a better understanding of how to approach hydration and fueling during training and competition, so they can better approach their individual hydration needs and strategies."
