Standing Against Injustice

Bring Them Home
This week, I met with advocates from the American Coalition for Ukraine to discuss how Congress can help bring home Ukrainian children who were cruelly abducted by Russia. Their advocacy is a powerful reminder that behind every stolen child is a family enduring unimaginable pain and waiting to be reunited.

Russia must be held accountable, and the international community must continue working to return every child safely home. Every responsible nation has a role to play in making those reunions possible. These families are still waiting-and the world must not look away.

Moral Authority
Earlier this week, I joined a Congressional shadow hearing on human rights in China, where I reflected on traveling to Tiananmen Square in 1991 and unfurling a banner honoring those who died for democracy. Since then, I have traveled to Tibet, advocated for Uyghurs facing genocide and stood with pro-democracy leaders in Hong Kong.

I questioned witnesses representing Uyghur, Tibetan, Chinese dissident and Hong Kong communities about how Congress can support those facing persecution. China's political prisoners are often told that the world has forgotten them, but our message remains clear: they are remembered, their courage matters and we will continue demanding justice. As I have long said, if we do not speak out for human rights in China because of commercial interests, we lose all moral authority to speak out for human rights anywhere.

Lessons Discarded
In a new op-ed, Congressman Bennie Thompson and I warn that, 25 years after September 11th, President Trump is weakening the national security systems created to protect the American people. With his threats to withdraw anti-terrorism grants, efforts to privatize airport security and deep cuts to America's counterterrorism, intelligence and cybersecurity workforces, the President is making America less safe.

After 9/11, Congress came together across party lines to close dangerous security gaps and strengthen coordination across the federal government. Today, the Trump Administration is dismantling those safeguards while diverting law enforcement resources and pursuing an illegal war that has heightened threats against Americans. Republicans in Congress must confront these risks before it is too late.
