9 December 2025, Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The European Union has disbursed a EUR 7 million grant to the Government of Uzbekistan in support of the continued implementation of the country's Agricultural Development Strategy 2020-2030. The announcement was made by EU Ambassador to Uzbekistan Toivo Klaar during his meeting with the Minister of Agriculture, Ibrokhim Abdurakhmonov, today. The meeting provided an opportunity to take stock of ongoing EU - Uzbekistan cooperation in the agriculture sector and to reaffirm the shared objective of advancing sustainable and inclusive development.

The European Union remains one of the few development partners providing direct grant support to the Government of Uzbekistan. The newly disbursed EUR 7 million forms part of a EUR 20 million EU commitment to the sector. Of this amount, EUR 6 million was released in 2023. The remaining EUR 7 million is expected to be disbursed in 2026, subject to continued satisfactory progress in agriculture sector reforms and the achievement of targets agreed jointly with the government.

"I wish to acknowledge the significant progress made by the Government of Uzbekistan in implementing its agricultural reform agenda. Major steps have been taken to promote stronger domestic production and exports, improve irrigation efficiency, and create a more favourable agribusiness climate. Looking ahead, the key challenges are no longer prices or quotas, but the need to strengthen economic land-use rights and food safety governance - both of which are essential to attracting investment, ensuring sustainability, and enhancing export competitiveness, particularly in the context of WTO accession." - Toivo Klaar, EU Ambassador to Uzbekistan.

Ambassador Klaar reaffirmed the European Union's continued commitment to supporting Uzbekistan in finalising the outstanding reforms in the agriculture sector. He emphasised that strengthened cooperation will advance the shared interests of mutual prosperity, enhanced trade opportunities, and deeper EU-Uzbekistan partnership.
