April brings bluster and beauty to Pittsburgh, and plenty of reasons to shake off the winter blahs for fun all around the city, from a wildflower hike to a wildlife baby shower.
We found five things to do this month - but you can always find more events on the University calendar.
Storytelling comes alive
Thursday, April 9, 7 p.m.
Pitt's Center on Race and Social Problems and the School of Law are partnering to present "On Sight Live," a stand-up style solo performance by Micah E. Johnson that explores violence, anger and mental health. The show, based on true stories, blends street culture, storytelling and science for a memorable night of theater.
Where: Alumni Theater Company, 6601 Hamilton Ave., Pittsburgh, PA, 15206
Tickets: This is a free event, but registration is requested.
Nights of whimsy
April 10-12, 16-19
Local playwright Teresa 'Tree' Martuccio's latest musical offering, "Moon Twins," is an inspired romp through Pan's forest, Renaissance Italy and even the moon. Watch heroines Mona and Lisa embark on a journey of self-discovery and learn what it means to challenge the patriarchal system they were born into.
Where: Glitterbox Theater, 210 W. 8th Ave., Homestead, PA, 15120
Tickets: Start at $20.
Cutest baby shower ever
Saturday, April 11, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
Spring brings sunshine, daffodils and baby season at Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh's Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. Celebrate new arrivals and support the organization's work caring for orphaned and injured animals at the annual Wildlife Baby Shower. This family-friendly event has it all - animal ambassadors, crafts, snacks and educational opportunities.

Fleeting spring beauty
Sunday, April 12, 9-11:30 a.m.
Spend a morning discovering early blooming wildflowers in Hays Woods, Pittsburgh's newest park. Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy's Ecological Restoration Coordinator Jared Belsky will lead a two-mile hike surveying the forest floor for spring ephemerals. The trail may be muddy, so dress accordingly.
Where: Hays Woods, Agnew Road Trailhead, 1017 Agnew Road, Pittsburgh, PA, 15227

Step into history
Saturday, April 25, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
According to a city government-led assessment, Pittsburgh has more than 800 sets of city steps, the most public staircases of any city in the U.S. Dive into more urban lore at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh's South Side branch with the local team behind the book "City Steps of Pittsburgh: A History and Guide." You'll also find maps and photos spotlighting Pittsburgh's renowned pedestrian infrastructure and appreciate the ingenuity that makes the city unique. This is a free event.
