Chairwoman Barela’s statement on Senate Bill 18 being killed

February 14, 2026

Senate Bill 18 is DEAD:

Today, I want to extend my sincere gratitude and appreciation to our Republican Senators for their unwavering leadership and tireless work to protect New Mexico's business community. With the defeat of Senate Bill 18, the so-called "Clear Horizons" bill, Senate Republicans stood firmly on principle and sent a powerful message: New Mexico will not sacrifice its industries, small businesses, employees, or entrepreneurs to reckless and radical policy. This is what leadership looks like.

At a time when our state should be focused on economic growth, job creation, and restoring opportunity, our Republican Senators led the charge to stop legislation that would have devastated employers, driven investment out of our state, and further burdened working families. They understood what was at stake - the livelihoods of New Mexicans across every sector of our economy.

New Mexico's oil and gas industry, small businesses on Main Street, family-owned operations, and the thousands of workers who depend on them are the backbone of our state. Protecting them is not just good policy - it is essential to our future. The Senate Republican Caucus made it clear: New Mexico is open for business. I am proud of our Republican Senators for standing united, fighting with courage, and delivering a major victory for our state. This is the kind of common-sense leadership we need to truly save New Mexico.

Together, we will continue to fight for policies that grow our economy, protect jobs, and preserve the New Mexico way of life.

Amy Barela
Chairwoman, Republican Party of New Mexico
