The 12th edition of the "Galle Dialogue" International Maritime Conference, organized by the Sri Lanka Navy, commenced today (24 September) at the Wave n' Lake Navy Hall, Welisara, Colombo.
The opening ceremony of the conference was graced by the Prime Minister of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka Dr. Harini Amarasuriya. The Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Kanchana Bangoda received the Chief Guest at the venue.
This year's forum is being held under the theme "Maritime Outlook of the Indian Ocean under Changing Dynamics", focusing on maritime governance, environmental sustainability, the blue economy and the promotion of a clean ocean.
Deputy Minister of Defence Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd) and Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd), alongside senior naval officials and dignitaries, were also present at the occasion, underscoring Sri Lanka's proactive role in regional maritime cooperation.
Setting the tone of the conference, the Commander of the Navy conducted welcome remarks and the subject theme of the conference was elaborated by the Chief of Staff Rear Admiral Damian Fernando. Dr. Harini Amarasuriya delivered the keynote address.
The conference has drawn an impressive participation of Navy and Coast Guard Chiefs and senior maritime professionals from 36 countries, along with representatives from 14 international organizations. Notably, Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda, the Tri Forces Commanders, former Commanders of the Navy and the members of the diplomatic corps were also present at the ceremony.
Over the two-day programme, delegates will deliberate on key challenges, including climate change, securing sea lanes and advancing regional governance, while balancing economic growth with environmental responsibility.
Since its launch in 2010, the Galle Dialogue has become a hallmark event in the international maritime calendar, reaffirming Sri Lanka's position as a central platform for fostering collaboration and security in the Indian Ocean.
