On the occasion of Human Rights Day annually celebrated on 10 December, UNESCO Regional Office in Almaty presented some of the most recent UNESCO materials on Media and Information Literacy (MIL) for journalists at the Central Asian Workshop "Artificial Intelligence and Digital Literacy: New Challenges in Countering Fake Information".
During the workshop, UNESCO Almaty raised participants' awareness on several global practical tools for journalism education including ' Media and information literate citizens: think critically, click wisely! ' publication, Media and Information Literacy: A Multimedia Toolkit for Media , and ' Journalism, fake news & disinformation: handbook for journalism education and training ' publication. In addition to that, UNESCO Almaty highlighted some of the recent MIL activities conducted in the region including MIL Mapping in Kazakhstan and " MIL Bridge Central Asia: Regional Solutions for Global Challenges in Media and Information Literacy " regional forum.
Among other interesting MIL materials from the region, Gulmira Sultanbayeva, professor at the Department of Humanities, Faculty of History and Law, Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University , presented 'RasInfo', mobile resource for factchecking and media literacy with integrated 'AI-Derek' tool. Also, 'Indicators of inaccurate information and disinformation in Kazakhstan' and 'Digital literacy indicators: a system for developing information culture in Kazakhstan' both published by in 2025 by Al-Farabi Kazakh National University were presented and distributed among the university libraries.
