City Employees Go Above and Beyond in Two Recent Rescues

Three City of Vista employees recently stepped forward to help others during two separate emergencies. Public Works Department employees Alex Landin and Chris Madero rescued a senior dog trapped near the pond at Buena Vista Park, while Wave Waterpark lifeguard Jorge Lopez helped rescue an injured man from the water at Sunset Cliffs in San Diego.

At the Buena Vista Park Duck Pond, Alex Landin and Chris Madero encountered a frightened senior dog trapped in reeds near the pond. The exhausted dog was unable to free itself and faced hot weather without a way to escape.

With compassion, patience, and determination, Alex and Chris worked to safely rescue the dog. A community member who witnessed their efforts contacted the City to recognize the care and professionalism they demonstrated.

"Employees like Alex and Chris are a wonderful reflection of the City of Vista," the resident wrote. "Their willingness to go above and beyond to help an animal in need deserves recognition and appreciation."

The rescue ended with the best possible outcome: The dog was reunited with its owner.

In a separate incident, Wave Waterpark Lifeguard Jorge Lopez put his lifesaving training into action while off duty at Sunset Cliffs in San Diego.

At approximately 7:50 p.m. on July 28, a climber reportedly fell from the cliffs and struck his head on the rocks and landed in the water. An off-duty U.S. Coast Guard member entered the water first, with Jorge immediately following as the second rescuer. As the operation continued after dark, they assisted San Diego Fire-Rescue personnel in safely removing the injured man from the water. He was then transported to a hospital for emergency medical care.

The incident is a powerful reminder that the skills developed by Wave lifeguards extend far beyond the waterpark. Their training, professionalism and ability to remain calm under pressure can make a lifesaving difference anytime and anywhere.

The City of Vista proudly recognizes Alex, Chris and Jorge for their compassion, courage and willingness to step forward when help was needed. Their actions exemplify the highest standards of public service and reflect the dedication City employees bring to the community-both on and off duty.
