MDP Statement on Susan Collins Failing Maine Women and Casting Decisive Vote for the SAVE Act

Augusta, Maine -Today, Susan Collins cast a decisive vote in favor of the SAVE Act, once again providing a critical vote for Donald Trump and clearing the way for legislation that could strip voting access from more than 300,000 Maine women.

Maine Democratic Party spokesperson Kristi Johnston released the following statement:

"Susan Collins has turned her back on Maine women. At a moment when she's facing the worst approval ratings of her career and ranks among the most unpopular senators in the country, she's choosing to stand with Donald Trump and support legislation that would make it harder for Maine women to vote. Collins can try to change the rules to save herself, but Mainers will see this for what it is - and are ready to reject her at the ballot box."

Reminder:

  • According to the Center for American Progress, the SAVE Act would disenfranchise millions of American citizens. As many as 69 million women nationwide who have taken their spouse's last name do not have a birth certificate that matches their current legal name.

  • In Maine alone, 343,619 womencould face new barriers to registering or casting a ballotunder Collins' backed legislation.
