Mayor Bowser to Reopen Modernized and Expanded Southeast Library

(Washington, DC) - On Thursday, September 10 at 11 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser and District leaders will celebrate the grand reopening of the modernized and expanded historic Southeast Library. Originally opened in 1922, the Southeast Library is the second-oldest neighborhood library in the District and one of four Carnegie libraries built in Washington, DC during the early twentieth century.

The $41 million modernization preserves the historic landmark while doubling its size through a major underground expansion that creates new, dedicated spaces for children and teens, a new central skylight, public study and meeting rooms, and updated technology infrastructure.

This reopening reflects the Bowser Administration's continued investment in neighborhood libraries across the District. Since 2015, all 26 DC Public Libraries have been funded for renovation, modernization, or expansion.
