Pennsylvania American Water Unveils $21 Million Upgrades at New Castle Water Treatment Plant

Local leaders join the company to celebrate enhanced water quality, reliability and emergency preparedness

NEW CASTLE, Pa. (Oct. 7, 2025) - Today, Pennsylvania American Water representatives along with local officials and community leaders gathered at the company's New Castle Water Treatment Plant to commemorate the completion of a $21 million investment, including a series of critical infrastructure upgrades designed to enhance water quality, operational reliability and regulatory compliance.

The event marked the culmination of a multi-phase improvement project that included the installation of ultraviolet (UV) disinfection technology for advanced pathogen control, the addition of a fifth filtration unit to meet Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) capacity guidance and the replacement of aging electrical systems with a modern switchgear and an emergency generator.

"These upgrades represent a major investment in the long-term sustainability and resilience of our water treatment operations," said Jon Natale, Pennsylvania American Water senior manager of operations. "We're proud to showcase the enhanced facility and reaffirm our commitment to delivering safe, high-quality water to this community."

The New Castle Water Treatment Plant serves approximately 41,000 customers and averages 5 million gallons of water per day (MGD). The newly added fifth filter was installed to support the plant's maximum daily capacity while allowing one filter to remain offline for maintenance or emergencies.

The infrastructure replaced during the project primarily consisted of electrical equipment, including transformers, motor control centers, and other components, most of which dated back to the mid-1980s.

"Today's unveiling is an investment in the future of our community," said Rep. Marla Brown (R-Lawrence). "Clean, reliable water is essential for every household, business and family. I applaud Pennsylvania American Water for its leadership and commitment to ensuring our region's water system remains strong, safe and prepared for generations to come."

The improvements significantly strengthen the region's water infrastructure and help ensure that the plant can maintain full treatment capacity even during equipment outages or emergency situations.

Attendees also participated in a guided tour of the upgraded facility, gaining firsthand insight into the new technologies and systems now in place.
