COLUMBUS, Ohio - As Ohioans make their way through this first major bout of winter weather, the Ohio Department of Commerce says the recent arctic blast serves as an important reminder for residents of manufactured homes and park operators to take steps to prepare for freezing weather that is yet to come. Manufactured homes can be more susceptible to the effects of freezing temperatures, so proper winterization is necessary to safeguard them from potential damage and enhance energy efficiency, leading to lower heating bills.
Commerce's Manufactured Homes Program has jurisdiction over the installation of manufactured homes, the licensing and regulation of more than 1,500 manufactured home parks, as well as operators, installers, dealers, brokers, and salespersons. The program also oversees the certification and regulation of manufactured home inspectors and inspection agencies. The Program is administered by the Division of Industrial Compliance and the Division of Real Estate and Professional Licensing.
"While we've already experienced cold weather, it isn't too late for Ohioans, especially those who reside in manufactured homes, to take the necessary steps to winterize their home and protect it from potential damage," said Division of Industrial Compliance Superintendent Robb Coventry. "By taking just a little time now, residents can help prevent costly damage to their homes and make the season more comfortable, affordable and enjoyable."
With cold temperatures expected to stick around for the next several months, residents are encouraged to tackle the following projects to prepare their homes:
Ohio's Home Weatherization Assistance Program helps eligible residents improve their home's energy efficiency and reduce utility bills. Participants receive a home inspection and services through local agencies in each county. Click here to learn more and find your local provider.
By taking these simple steps, Ohioans can protect their homes, stay warm, and enjoy a safer, more cost-effective winter season.
