It's Breast Cancer Awareness Month. At Emplify Health by Gundersen Friendship Hospital, October is more than just a month on the calendar. It's an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of early detection, fast and convenient screening access, and the power of community involvement in supporting women's health.
In the past, 3D mammograms were offered at Emplify Health by Gundersen Friendship Hospital through a mobile mammography motorhome, equipped with a 3D unit. Appointments were only available once a week, and it was difficult for patients with limited mobility to access the service. In 2024, the hospital upgraded to an in-house 3D mammography unit, offering quick access to appointments, five days a week, with more accurate imaging and faster turnaround for test results.
Karen Schulz, a multimodality technologist in Emplify Health by Gundersen Friendship Hospital Radiology department, has been caring for area residents for more than 30 years. She has seen firsthand how access and technology have improved over time.
"We can usually get someone in for a mammogram within a day of scheduling," Schulz says. "As long as they're eligible through their insurance, there's very little wait time."
Patients are often surprised by how quickly they receive results. One recent patient shared her experience:
"Karen was kind, quick, efficient and wonderful. The information had been read by radiologists at La Crosse before I even got home. In less than half an hour from the start of my appointment, I received my results on MyChart. Sure beats the old days of waiting and wondering. Having a 3D imaging machine at our small rural hospital certainly changes the quality of life for women in our community."
The American Cancer Society recommends that women begin yearly mammograms at age 40, or even earlier if there is a family history. Schulz wants patients to understand how powerful early detection is.
"A mammogram can help us find a lump way before you ever get the chance to feel it," she says. "People often think if there's no family history, they're not at risk. That's not true.
Many women delay screenings due to hesitation and fear from outdated assumptions. Schulz wants patients to know that today's mammograms are faster and more comfortable than ever.
"If it hurts, the technologist is doing something wrong," Schulz says. "We're trained to make this as easy and comfortable as possible. We take four pictures, two of each breast. Most women are in and out within 10 minutes."
Comfort and trust are key. Schulz and her team prioritize making each patient feel heard and cared for.
"Don't let the procedure scare you," she says. "It's never as bad as people make it out to be. If you feel any discomfort, tell your technologist. We can reposition you."
Community partnerships are another important tool in raising awareness and increasing screening rates.
Schulz notes that older women tend to be more consistent about their yearly exams. But for younger women, community engagement can be a powerful motivator.
"A lot of younger women don't feel the urgency, but more and more are being diagnosed with cancer. We need to reach them where they are," she says.
This month, Emplify Health by Gundersen Friendship Hospital is teaming up with businesses to raise awareness. Stickers placed on coffee cups will serve as reminders to schedule mammograms because early detection can save lives. Local participating businesses are The Friendly Brew in Friendship, Tiffany's Buds & Beans in Westfield, and the Rustic Roads coffee truck.
This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Emplify Health by Gundersen Friendship Hospital encourages everyone to take a proactive role in their health. Getting a mammogram not only supports your own health and quality of life but can also inspire others to do the same.
