First-year and transfer students began their Stony Brook journeys last week, kicking off New Seawolf Welcome Week by taking part in a full slate of events across campus that combined academic preparation with opportunities to meet people and become part of the Seawolf community.

After first-year move-in day on August 17, new students attended orientation sessions and workshops to get settled, connect with faculty, staff and classmates and learn about the academic resources available to them. They also got a first look at campus life through club and organization fairs, social events and late-night activities.

At the First-Year Student Convocation, Stony Brook University President Andrea Goldsmith officially welcomed the Class of 2030 and new transfer students, encouraging students to fully embrace the years ahead.

Stony Brook University President Andrea Goldsmith lent a hand to help students move into their new residences on April 17.

"It is an absolute joy and honor to officially welcome you, our newest students from the great class of 2030, to Stony Brook University, the number one public university in this great state," she said. "All of you and your families have entrusted us with your education, and we are absolutely thrilled that you're joining this amazing community."

Goldsmith noted that in many ways she understands how it feels to be new to Stony Brook campus.

"Last year at this time, I was in the same position, more or less, as you are today," she said. "I was still unpacking boxes, trying to figure out how to find my way around this crazy campus, and excited to embrace all that this outstanding magical place has to offer."

She also acknowledged that the transition to college can come with uncertainty, sharing that she struggled during her own first year in college.

"Although I was struggling, I didn't give up," she told students. "My advice to you is to so the same. Believe in yourselves and give yourselves the chance to succeed in pursuing your dreams… Take risks, embrace challenges and don't be afraid to fail."

Beyond the academic programming, Welcome Week gave new Seawolves plenty of ways to experience campus life, with game and movie nights, a food truck rodeo, rollerskating, karaoke, arts and crafts, fitness classes and more. Together, the events helped bring campus back to life and gave students a chance to begin building the connections that will shape their Stony Brook experience.
