GCSU DPS Monthly Safety Tips

GCSU DPS Monthly Safety Tips

Public Safety Thursday April 2, 2026

As we move into April and fully embrace the spring season at Georgia College & State University, we are reminded that this time of year brings renewed energy to our campus. With that energy comes increased activity - more time outdoors, more travel and more community engagement - which makes it especially important that we remain intentional about safety and awareness.

Spring is one of the busiest times on campus. We see more pedestrians, cyclists and visitors enjoying our beautiful environment. I encourage everyone to stay alert and minimize distractions, whether you are walking across campus or driving through it. A moment of inattention can quickly lead to preventable incidents. Please use designated crosswalks, remain visible and take an extra second to ensure those around you see you.

This time of year also brings an increase in outdoor activities. While enjoying campus, remember to secure your personal property. Do not leave belongings unattended, and always lock your vehicles. Taking these simple precautions significantly reduces the opportunity for theft and helps us maintain a safe environment for everyone.

April in Georgia also means unpredictable weather. Severe storms can develop quickly. It is critical to stay informed. I encourage you to familiarize yourself with the campus emergency alerts and identify safe shelter locations in the buildings where you spend the most time. Preparation and awareness are key components of personal safety.

As spring events and social gatherings increase, I also want to emphasize the importance of responsible decision-making. Look out for one another, make safe choices and plan ahead when attending events. Our goal is not only enforcement, but education and prevention - ensuring that everyone can enjoy this season safely.

The GCSU Department of Public Safety remains committed to serving and protecting our campus community. We are here as a resource, a partner and a constant presence dedicated to your safety. If you see something that does not seem right, say something. Your awareness and willingness to act play a vital role in keeping our campus secure.

Let's work together to make this spring semester both safe and successful.

Respectfully,
Chief Wes Hardin
Director of Public Safety
