WASHINGTON - Today, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro issued the following statement in response to President Trump's State of the Union Address:
"For the last year, while a cost-of-living crisis has been crushing American families, President Trump has done nothing to help them. Instead, he has given away even more tax breaks to the rich; terrorized our cities with masked agents; centralized power and prosecuted his political enemies; enriched himself and his family and built himself a golden ballroom while the American people are struggling to pay their bills.
"Tonight was more of the same. Beneath all his bluster and boasting is the fact that he does not care about the struggles of the American people. His signature achievement last year was a tax bill that gave away $4.5 trillion to the wealthy and the biggest corporations, and which gutted Medicaid in order to pay for it. In the same bill, he refused to extend Affordable Care Act premium subsidies, causing healthcare costs to skyrocket for tens of millions of Americans.
"Those were his priorities, and he made clear tonight that he has no vision for how to lower costs for Americans who are living paycheck to paycheck. There is no help coming from this White House.
"President Trump has abandoned the middle and working class, but I will not. Working families make America strong, and I will continue to fight for policies that put them first-protecting Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, making permanent the expanded, monthly Child Tax Credit, enacting paid family and medical leave, ensuring access to affordable healthcare, investing in education, and standing up to corporate greed. That is the affordability agenda that the American people deserve."
