HKR International Limited ("HKRI", or "the Group") participated in The Community Chest of Hong Kong's ("The CCHK") Dress Casual Day again this year. Beyond dressing light and green to conserve energy consumption, the Group has elevated this into a month-long sustainability-themed campaign, aiming at reducing CO2 emissions across its operations in six cities, including Hong Kong, Shanghai, Jiaxing, Hangzhou, Tokyo, and Bangkok. These collective efforts contributed to a total reduction of approximately 9,170 kg of CO2 equivalent (kg CO2e), equivalent to planting 366 trees, underlining HKRI's value, "We Create a Lifestyle," and its commitment to fostering a sustainable and better community.
This year, HKRI saw impressive participation from 1,450 employees who embraced an eco-friendly dress code by opting for minimalist attire and low-impact fabrics. Additionally, they took part in diverse enjoyable and engaging energy-saving and carbon reduction activities. A total of around 30 initiatives integrated sports and gamified elements, challenging the notion that environmental protection is monotonous. Demonstrating a strong commitment to social responsibility, the Group made a charitable donation on behalf of its employees to support non-profit organisations affiliated with The CCHK.
Aligned with the campaign theme "Act Green HKRI Green Rangers!" promoting low-carbon habits, HKRI's Hong Kong offices organised an activity named "E-leg-tricity Smoothie Bike Challenge". This creative event had participants pedal on a specially designed stationary bikes, generating power to blend fresh fruits and other healthy ingredients into nutritious and detox smoothies. This interactive, gamified challenge offered an all-in-one low-carbon experience, not only promoting a healthy diet and physical fitness, but also showcased the potential of renewable energy in an engaging manner.
In mainland China, a collaborative initiative was launched across various business units, featuring creative events to promote a low-carbon lifestyle. Activities included offering healthy drinks, sharing green lunches, and initiating fitness walks. Employees were encouraged to participate in a smoothie bike challenge, "Swap for Charity", "Green Birthday Celebrations for Staff", and "Green Bingo Challenge" where they could complete eco-friendly tasks for a chance to win sustainable gifts. Furthermore, The Sukhothai Shanghai hosted the "Zero Food Waste Challenge", incentivising employees to save leftovers and aiming to reduce food waste in the canteen by 10%.
The Group's business in Thailand launched month-long sustainability-themed initiatives aimed at promoting a low-carbon culture among its workforce. The Sukhothai Bangkok's "Energy Saving Week" focused on reducing energy consumption. A vibrant "Vegetarian Festival" encouraged plant-based diets and was complemented by an innovative "Herb and Vegetable Garden Arrangement Competition" and a vegetable planting initiative next to its restaurant. The sustainability month concluded with a "Mangrove Tree Planting" event, contributing 100 trees that are expected to additionally absorb a total of 2,200 kg CO2e per year.
Through these activities across regional offices, HKRI colleagues were inspired to explore various avenues for adopting a low-carbon lifestyle. These efforts, apart from benefiting the local communities, collectively contributed to a total reduction of around 9,170 kg CO2e, equivalent to the planting of 366 trees. The collective effort of every employee in the Group turns each small step into a significant leap for the environment. Additionally, the Group encouraged colleagues to embrace low-carbon habits by providing useful tips for living a green life.
