Gov. Rhoden Highlights Freedom to Worship on National Day of Prayer
PIERRE, S.D. - Today, Governor Larry Rhoden highlighted his legislation to defend the freedom to worship while honoring National Day of Prayer.
"South Dakota's motto is, 'Under God, the people rule.' And we recognize that our rights, liberties, and freedoms are given to us by God - not the government," said Governor Larry Rhoden. "Our forefathers came to America seeking one thing - and when freedom comes under assault, South Dakota stands up to defend it."
This past session, Governor Rhoden signed a bill that defends the freedom to worship. SB 113 makes disrupting religious worship in South Dakota a felony, creating stronger consequences for anyone who interferes with religious freedoms and encouraging worshippers to gather without fear.
Governor Rhoden also honored National Day of Prayer by proclaiming May 7, 2026, as "Day of Prayer" across the state of South Dakota. You can find the proclamation here.
The National Day of Prayer is a Public Law established in the United States Congress in 1952. This law directs the President of the United States to proclaim the first Thursday of May as "National Day of Prayer." This year's theme is, "Glorify God Among the Nations, Seeking Him in All Generations."
Governor Rhoden participated in a National Day of Prayer service at the Capitol. Photos from the service can be found here and here.
