Offshore Wind was a Failed Experiment: Why Then is the State AG Suing the Trump Administration

Senator Carmen Amato, Jr., Assemblyman Brian Rumpf and Assemblyman Gregory Myhre are calling on Governor Sherrill to withdraw New Jersey from a lawsuit filed by the New Jersey Attorney General's Office against the Trump Administration's policy effort to cancel offshore wind leases.

The 9th District Legislative Delegation issued the following statement:

"Attempting to construct offshore wind turbines off New Jersey's environmentally vulnerable coastline proved to be a failed experiment for former Governor Phil Murphy. But as recent events have shown, Governor Sherrill's Administration has not learned from that experience, including the wasted resources and the cost to our state's residents and businesses from past efforts.

"As coastal legislators, we have also heard directly from constituents deeply concerned about the potential impacts of offshore wind development on marine wildlife, commercial and recreational fishing, tourism, and the character and views of our coastline.

"In 2023, Ørsted abandoned the Ocean Wind 1 and Ocean Wind 2 projects off the New Jersey coast, citing rising costs and supply-chain challenges. The State subsequently reached a $125 million settlement with Ørsted related to the canceled projects.

"Instead of wasting more resources on yet another lawsuit against the Trump Administration, our state's energy policy should focus on reliability, affordability and the ability to meet New Jersey's growing electricity demand. That includes maintaining and expanding proven sources of reliable electricity generation, such as nuclear power."
