Gilbert, Ariz. - As World Migratory Bird Day approaches on the second Saturday in May, the Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch invites residents and visitors to experience one of Arizona's top birdwatching destinations.
Each year, billions of birds migrate across continents, and the Riparian Preserve serves as a vital stopover in the desert. With more than 300 bird species documented on-site, the Preserve offers a unique opportunity to witness migration in action, right in the heart of Gilbert.
"Studying birds has always been an extraordinary challenge," said Rebecca Stephenson of Desert Rivers Audubon Society. "Exactly where birds go and what they do on their long journeys still remains kind of a mystery, but Motus technology allows us to finally start connecting the dots."
Through a partnership between Gilbert Parks and Recreation and the Desert Rivers Audubon Society, the Preserve is also home to a Motus Wildlife Tracking Tower, part of an international network helping scientists better understand migration patterns.
"World Migratory Bird Day is a reminder that local parks like the Riparian Preserve play an important role in a much larger global journey," said Gilbert Naturalist Kellie Elliott.
Visitors are encouraged to explore the Preserve's trails and observation areas, especially during the early morning hours when bird activity is at its peak.
