Connect with stories, struggles, and solutions at "Tainted Gold: Resistance and Futures in the Ecuadorian Amazon," a community film screening and conversation exploring environmental justice struggles and river-based ways of life in Ecuador's Napo River Basin, on Wednesday, March 11, from 5-7 p.m. in Academic West 210.
Watch the premiere of episode one of "The Bleeding Heart of Ecuador," a film series exploring rivers, extraction, and environmental justice in the Ecuadorian Amazon, co-created by Will Henkel, filmmaker and graduate student in Western's Department of Anthropology.
The second short film, "Yaku Churis - Niños del Río," features Yaku Churis, a youth river school on the Río Jatun Yaku.
The two film screenings will be followed by a facilitated discussion about gold mining's impact on the Amazon, community-led solutions, and what meaningful action looks like across borders. Panelists include Henkel, Dayuma Albán, a professor in the Anthropology Department at Universidad San Francisco de Quito, Ecuador, and WWU Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies Francisco Laso.
