NEW CASTLE - County Executive Marcus Henry Marcus Henry visited one of the County's summer camps at the Route 9 Library and Innovation Center on Wednesday. During his visit, the County Executive outlined a vision for how the County can better serve its young people moving forward with a focus on accessibility, equity, and youth engagement.
On Wednesday's event, the children had come straight from a morning spent at Surratte Pool, which has undergone major renovations recently. The pool now features new safety infrastructure, upgraded facilities in the pool house, and amenities like Wi-Fi and LED lighting. With more improvements still underway, Surratte Pool is a prime example of the Administration's commitment to increased access to recreational facilities for residents and their children.
"Whether it's a quiet corner to read or a pool to gather and grow, our kids deserve spaces where they can thrive," said County Executive Marcus Henry.
County Executive Henry laid out a clear roadmap for the coming months, beginning with a comprehensive assessment of current youth programs, both public and private, to better understand which communities are being served and where critical gaps remain. Alongside this effort, County officials will strengthen collaboration with nonprofit partners, identifying shared goals and more effective ways to deliver youth services. The County also plans to research and adopt best practices from successful youth programs nationwide.
Looking ahead even further, Henry announced several long-term initiatives to improve how families find and engage with available programs. A centralized digital app is in development to make registration and communication easier and more accessible. The County will also work with transportation providers to reduce logistical barriers that prevent many youth from participating. Finally, plans are underway to launch a New Castle County Youth Advisory Council, ensuring that young people themselves have a voice in shaping the programs designed for them.
"These steps will expand services, but they will also make sure every young person, no matter their zip code, has access to the tools, opportunities, and support they need to succeed," said Henry.
