Rayburn Electric Cooperative Breaks Ground on Rayburn Energy Station II

SHERMAN, Texas, June 10, 2026 - Rayburn Electric Cooperative yesterday broke ground on Rayburn Energy Station II (RES II), a $685 million, 570-megawatt natural gas generation facility that will strengthen reliability for more than 650,000 Texans served by Rayburn's four Member cooperatives across North Texas.

The project is being financed in part through the Texas Energy Fund, a state initiative created following Winter Storm Uri. Rayburn was the only electric cooperative selected during the program's initial phase, chosen from more than 125 applicants.

Located adjacent to Rayburn Energy Station I (RES I) in Sherman, RES II will provide firm, dispatchable generation during periods of peak demand, bolstering reliability across the ERCOT region.

The June 9 groundbreaking ceremony brought together Texas energy, regulatory, and community leaders to celebrate the start of construction. Speakers included David A. Naylor, President and CEO of Rayburn Electric Cooperative; Mayor Shawn Teamann of the City of Sherman; Representative Katrina Pierson; and Commissioner Kathleen Jackson of the Public Utility Commission of Texas.

Rayburn selected Siemens Energy and Primoris Services Corporation as key partners in the development of RES II.

Siemens Energy will supply ten SGT-800 industrial gas turbines, providing the plant's core generation technology. The SGT-800 is a proven, high-efficiency turbine platform designed for fast-start peaking and intermediate-cycle operation, making it well-suited to ERCOT's real-time dispatch environment and the reliability demands of North Texas.

"With ten of our SGT-800 gas turbines onsite, Rayburn Energy Station II will have a total capacity of 570 MW and the ability to deliver reliable, fast-start power to support their members during periods of peak demand, strengthening grid resilience across Texas as energy needs continue to grow," said David Blank, Sales Director for North America at Siemens Energy.

Primoris Services Corporation will serve as the engineering, procurement, and construction partner for the project, bringing the infrastructure and execution discipline required to deliver a generation facility of this scale and complexity on a defined timeline.

The project is expected to create approximately 250 construction jobs and 14 permanent operational positions, with commercial operations planned for summer 2028. When complete, RES I and RES II will form a combined generation complex exceeding 1,300 megawatts in one of the fastest-growing regions in Texas.
