Tampa tennis players with Parks and Recreation's free Wheelchair Tennis program are gearing up for an upcoming tournament and encouraging others interested in playing to join the fun.

The program was launched a decade ago with two or three participants. It now has about 12, and there is room to add more.

Players need only a Rec Card ($15 annually) to participate. Interested athletes of all skill levels are welcome, and they don't have to bring any equipment. Parks and Recreation can provide sports chairs, racquets, and tennis balls.

"The best part is seeing the smiles on everyone's faces; we've become close friends, almost like a family," Racquet and Paddle Sports Supervisor Andrew Sheets said. "I love seeing people stay active and just enjoying the sport of tennis."

The group meets Mondays from 7-9 pm at Julian B Lane's tennis courts, off North Boulevard. The first hour is for drills, and the second hour for games.

The upcoming tournament will be held March 14-15 at JBL. Registration for that event closes March 6. Players can choose singles, doubles, or both, and slot themselves in one of four skill levels. Write to [email protected] or call (813) 712-0321 to register.

"Andrew is another example of the staffers we have who are committed to helping others," Parks and Recreation Director Ted Fowler said. "He has kept this program growing for 10 years, and has looked for wheelchair training, clinics, and classes from the USTA."
