Chinese Program talk on ‘Chinese Mysticism: Ancestors, Spirits and Ghosts,’ April 24

The Chinese Program in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures will host Dr. Daniel Meissner, professor emeritus of history in the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences, for a guest lecture titled "Chinese Mysticism: Ancestors, Spirits, and Ghosts" on Friday, April 24, from 10 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. in Lalumiere Hall 198.

This lecture offers a brief introduction to how Chinese belief systems are shaped from a fundamentally different perspective than those in the West.

The lecture also examines how these beliefs are expressed in the sociocultural structure of ancient China and how they continue to influence Chinese civilization today.

Meissner is a retired historian of modern China at Marquette. He specializes in late Qing history and culture and Sino-American diplomatic relations. During his tenure at Marquette, he taught undergraduate and graduate courses and also taught in China as a Fulbright scholar. His research explores the roles of entrepreneurs, officials and diplomats in the modernization of late imperial China.

No registration is required.
