Shepherd University Expands Musical Opportunities Through Community Music Program

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV - Shepherd University is expanding its Community Music Program, increasing opportunities for children and adults throughout the Eastern Panhandle and surrounding region to participate in private lessons, ensembles, classes, workshops, and summer music programs.

Newly appointed Community Music Coordinator Lauren Frick is leading the initiative, which serves musicians of all ages and experience levels, from beginners taking their first lessons to experienced musicians seeking additional instruction and performance opportunities.

"Our vision is for Community Music to become a vibrant hub where everyone feels they belong," said Frick. "Music is one of the most powerful ways to build community, foster creativity, and enrich lives. We want Shepherd to be a place where a five-year-old takes their very first lesson, a retiree rediscovers an instrument they haven't played in decades, families make music together, and aspiring musicians receive exceptional instruction, all under one roof." 

The Community Music Program offers private instruction in voice, piano, and a wide range of instruments taught by Shepherd University faculty, professional musicians, and experienced teachers. Lessons are tailored to meet each student's goals, whether recreational or pre-professional. 

Participants can also take part in a growing selection of ensembles and classes designed to encourage collaborative music-making and lifelong learning. Current offerings include community orchestras, big band and jazz ensembles, youth chorus, recorder ensemble, trombone choir, early childhood music classes, adult piano classes, music theory, workshops, and seasonal camps.  

The expanded program reflects a broader commitment to strengthening connections between Shepherd University and the surrounding community. 

"One of our goals is to further nurture Shepherd University as an educational, cultural, and economic center for the region," Frick said. "We want Community Music to be a bridge to our neighbors, creating opportunities for people of all backgrounds and abilities to experience the transformative power of music." 

Future plans include expanding ensemble offerings, increasing scholarship opportunities, developing partnerships with local schools and arts organizations, and creating programming that serves learners across every stage of life. 

The Community Music Program is open to children, teens, adults, seniors, beginners, experienced musicians, and anyone with a desire to learn.
