BOZEMAN - Montana State University will hold its annual tree planting event on Friday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to noon. The Arbor Day planting will take place on the west side of MSU Bozeman's Yellowstone Hall along South 15th Avenue.

The tree planting is free and open to the public. Anyone wanting to help with the plantings is welcome to pitch in. MSU arborist Mitch Sangl encourages volunteers to bring work gloves, but shovels will be provided. Participation is not required to attend.

"We're going to plant three honey locust trees," Sangl said. "We'll backfill the holes, stake the saplings and mulch them. We'll also talk about the dos and the don'ts of proper tree planting to make sure you have a successful tree planting."

Sangl said the plantings are funded with an $800 grant from the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation. The three saplings will replace two unhealthy trees and one that was damaged.

MSU Bozeman, which is home to more than 2,700 trees, has also been redesignated as a Tree Campus USA by the Arbor Day Foundation. MSU achieved the designation by meeting Tree Campus USA's five standards, which include maintaining a tree advisory committee, maintaining a tree care plan, dedicating annual expenditures toward trees, observing Arbor Day and committing to a student service-learning project. MSU first earned the designation in 2013, and it has been renewed each year since.

"We want people to come and learn and to celebrate Arbor Day," Sangl said. "Together, we can help maintain a great future on campus involving trees and agriculture."
