Sudan: IRC response to fire in Tawila, North Darfur

Nairobi, Kenya, February 11, 2026 - Zeleke Bacha, IRC West Sudan Director said,

"The International Rescue Committee is devastated that several hundred shelters have been burned down in a displacement camp in Tawila town, in North Darfur, affecting over 500 households. Families living in Tawila have already endured unimaginable hardship; many have fled violence multiple times, lost loved ones, and are living with deep trauma and acute shortages of food, water and healthcare. To see what little they had left go up in flames is heartbreaking.

"IRC and local partners are on the ground providing urgent psychosocial support, medical consultations, emergency cash and clean water to affected households, prioritizing those who have lost everything once again. But the needs are immense, and these repeated shocks are pushing already vulnerable people beyond the brink."

When the conflict began in 2023, the IRC adapted its programs and scaled up our response to address increased humanitarian needs. Despite operational challenges, the IRC continues to provide support in Blue Nile, Gedaref, Khartoum, River Nile, South Kordofan and White Nile states and is working on re-establishing its presence in Jazera state. We have an office in Port Sudan and are expanding our presence into other states, including Darfur.
