Mobile, Ala. - As part of ongoing upgrades throughout the city's Central Business District, three streets in Downtown Mobile will be converted from one-way to two-way traffic next week.
As part of the Downtown Street Optimization Project, Scott Street and Bayou Street between Government and Congress streets will be converted from one-way to two-way traffic overnight on Wednesday Jan. 21. N. Jefferson Street between Springhill Avenue and Congress Street will also be converted to two-way traffic during that same time. The work will take place overnight on Wednesday, and motorists can expect the new two-way configurations by Thursday, Jan. 22.
Drivers should pay attention to the temporary "No Parking" signs, as on-street parking will not be allowed on these streets after construction begins at approximately 5:30 p.m. Wednesday evening.
Please note that the sections of Bayou, Scott and Jefferson streets that intersect with St. Louis Street will remain closed until Feb. 18 to accommodate work happening as part of the St. Louis Street "Complete Streets" project. You can learn more about that project by clicking here.
These ongoing changes are part of the city's effort to implement a comprehensive Downtown Street Optimization Plan, which was developed in partnership with the Downtown Mobile Alliance. This project aims to make Mobile's Central Business District safer and more accessible.
In addition to reconfiguring, restriping, and improving several downtown streets, the project will replace traffic signals at low-volume downtown intersections with four-way stops to enhance pedestrian safety and reduce traffic congestion. The overall goal is to slow traffic, create additional parking, improve pedestrian safety, and enhance business access throughout the area.
