LĪHUʻE, Hawaiʻi - The Hawai'i Department of Transportation (HDOT) is notifying Kaua'i residents of the closure of the Port Allen Airport public parking lot near Salt Pond Beach from Wednesday, Oct. 7 through Sunday, Oct. 11, to support Hurricane Lowell recovery work.
At 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 7, orange barriers were placed on Kuʻiloko Road just after the Sky Dive Kaua'i hangar, to prevent access to the public parking lot during county recovery work. This will limit beachgoers in the area so crews can safely operate heavy machinery to move sand back toward Salt Pond, for the restructuring of the sand dunes that protect the salt ponds. Sky Dive Kaua'i will remain open.
Kaua'i County crews have also placed barriers on Lokokai Road near Kālani Road, to limit beach park access during recovery work on the county portion of Salt Pond Beach, adjacent to the parking lot. Sand removal and replacement will take place during daytime hours between 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 7 through Friday, Oct. 9.
On Saturday, Oct. 10, salt makers, Hui Hana Paʻakai o Hanapēpē, will host a community workday for all interested, to assist in redistributing sand to the dunes from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please visit huihanapaakai.org for more details.
The Port Allen Airport public parking lot will be reopened on Sunday, Oct. 11, when this work concludes.
