(BOWIE, Md.) - Bowie State University at the forefront of advancing educational excellence, proudly supporting a dedicated cohort of 75 teachers as they embark on the journey to attain their National Board Certification. This initiative reflects the university's unwavering commitment to empowering educators and fostering transformative change within classrooms and communities.

National Board Certification is a vital step toward elevating the teaching profession in Maryland, providing educators with the resources and support they need to achieve national recognition. In addition to classroom teachers, school counselors, school psychologists, and librarians are also eligible for this prestigious national board certification, broadening the scope of its impact across the educational landscape.

Among the passionate educators participating in this initiative is Kevin Lewis, who brings over 12 years of experience to the table. Beginning his teaching career in Dorchester County, Lewis tirelessly advocated for minority students in a predominantly white community. His passion for diversity and representation ultimately led him to Laurel High School, where he has made a remarkable impact-most notably guiding a record-breaking 10 students to be selected for the Maryland All-State Chorus out of 3,000 auditioning students.

"I can't thank Bowie State University enough," Lewis said. "If Bowie State hadn't promoted this program, I wouldn't have known about it. I believe earning my National Board Certification will make me a sharper and more effective teacher, which directly benefits my students."

Lewis emphasizes the critical need for representation in education, particularly the importance of having more Black male educators. "We need more Black educators because we affect change in ways that others cannot," he asserted. "My most memorable teachers were Black educators who inspired me, and I strive to do the same for my students."

The National Board Certification initiative is spearheaded by Bowie State's Center for Research and Mentoring for Black Male Students and Teachers in collaboration with the Center of Excellence for Educator Preparation and Innovation at Voorhees University. This program has proven instrumental in creating pathways for educators seeking to elevate their practice.

Achieving National Board certification not only enhances teaching practices but also comes with a $10,000 salary increase upon completion, providing both financial and professional incentives for participants.

"This program is not just about my growth; it's about showing my students that they can achieve great things too," Lewis said. "By supporting educators through initiatives like the National Board Certification, Bowie State University is shaping a brighter future for students and communities across Maryland."
