WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congressman Dan Meuser (PA-09) voted in favor of the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act, commonsense legislation that strengthens election integrity by requiring government-issued photo identification to vote and documentary proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections.
Americans are already required to show valid identification to drive a car, open a bank account, buy cold medicine, rent a hotel room, purchase alcohol, board a flight, donate blood, or access government benefits. Voting in a federal election should meet at least the same basic standard.
The House has previously passed the SAVE Acttwice to require proof of citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections. The SAVE America Actbuilds on that effort by establishing a nationwide requirement for valid photo ID at the ballot box, while preserving strong proof-of-citizenship safeguards.
Congressman Meuser said, "Every fraudulent vote cancels out a legitimate vote cast by a law-abiding citizen. With 84 percent of Americans supporting photo ID for voting, the SAVE America Actdelivers the accountability and transparency voters expect and deserve. At a time when more than 15 million illegal immigrants have entered the country under the Biden-Harris Administration, Congress must act to protect the integrity of federal elections and restore trust in our democratic system. I applaud the House passage of the SAVE America Act, and I strongly encourage the Senate to bring this bill to the floor for an open debate. This way, Senate Republicans can clearly lay out its importance, and Senate Democrats can explain to the American people why they oppose requiring a photo ID to vote."
The SAVE America Act passed the House by a bipartisan vote of 218-213 and now heads to the Senate for consideration.
