Upcoming Change to Credit and Debit Card Processing Fees

The Vermont DMV will soon apply a 2.3% processing fee to credit and debit card payments. Customers will continue to have several no-fee options, including ACH (direct payment from your bank account), cash (where accepted), and check. ACH is available for online transactions through mydmv.vermont.gov, which remains the fastest and most convenient way to complete many DMV services.

The exact start date for the credit card fee is forthcoming; the fee will begin when system implementation is complete and will be in effect no later than June 1st. We are sharing this information early to ensure transparency and give customers advance notice before the fee takes effect.

No-Fee Payment Options

Customers may continue to complete DMV transactions without paying a processing fee by using:

  • ACH (available for many online services at mydmv.vermont.gov)

  • Cash (where accepted)

  • Check (accepted at all DMV locations)

Why This Change Is Being Made

This update reflects the actual cost of processing card transactions and aligns with common practices across many service providers. Sharing this information early helps customers plan ahead and choose the payment method that works best for them.

When the Fee Will Begin

The fee will take effect as soon as system implementation is complete and will be fully in place by June 1st. The DMV will update this page once the exact start date is confirmed.
