SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:

On Sunday, August 17, 2025, at approximately 12:58 AM, the El Cajon Police Department received reports of a traffic collision involving a vehicle that struck a fire hydrant and a power pole near the intersection of Chase Ave and Avocado Ave. The damaged fire hydrant sent water gushing into the air, and the power pole had been sheared. Callers also reported that a pedestrian pushing a shopping cart had been struck and appeared to be deceased. El Cajon Police and Heartland Fire responded to the collision scene, where they found an unidentified male deceased after suffering from significant injuries. The vehicle and driver involved in the collision had fled the scene prior to police arrival.

The vehicle was located unoccupied in the 500 block of Sandalwood Dr. with an airbag deployed and damage consistent with the crash. Officers contacted an adult male at the associated residence who displayed signs of intoxication and admitted to being the driver. He was taken into custody without incident.
