By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:
WHEREAS, cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the United States of America and in the Commonwealth of Virginia; and
WHEREAS, cancer registrars are data information specialists who capture a complete history, diagnosis, treatment, and health status for every cancer patient in Virginia and across the nation; and
WHEREAS, the curated data collected by cancer registrars provides essential information to researchers, healthcare providers, and public health officials, enabling them to monitor and advance cancer treatments, conduct research, and improve cancer prevention and screening programs; and
WHEREAS, cancer registrars work in hospital, state, and federal cancer registries, and the information they collect is reported, as required by law, to state and federal government agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Cancer Institute; and
WHEREAS, cancer registrars are essential in the fight against cancer, and the Commonwealth of Virginia appreciates their dedication, professionalism, and service to our families, friends, and loved ones; and
WHEREAS, National Cancer Registrars Week highlights the important role cancer registrars play in capturing the data that informs cancer research, prevention, and treatment programs;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Abigail D. Spanberger, do hereby recognize April 13-19, 2026, as NATIONAL CANCER REGISTRARS WEEK in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
