On Wednesday, 5 June 2025, Grindrod Terminals in Richards Bay marked World Environment Day 2025 with a lively roadshow at all their sites. This year's theme, "Beat Plastic Pollution," inspired us to implement practical initiatives that promote sustainability and teamwork across departments.
The roadshow took place across Kusasa, Navitrade, Seamunye, Valley, and Stevedores, bringing together employees from all areas to make a difference. One of the highlights of the day was planting 12 spekboom trees across different locations, which is a small yet significant act, considering these trees have fantastic carbon-absorbing abilities.
With a sense of purpose, our teams got to work, cleaning up around the sites and collecting a total of 30 bags of waste and plastic. The momentum didn't stop there -Grindrod staff also teamed up with Foskor, Umhlathuze Municipality, Onah Logistics, Bidvest, and Express Employment Professionals for a major beach clean-up. It was a great example of community spirit focused on protecting our shared environment.
The local newspaper, Zululand Observer, covered the event, helping us spread our message further into the community. We shared refreshments at all locations, and we held informative toolbox talks for our employees, emphasizing the importance of World Environment Day and raising awareness about plastic pollution and responsible environmental practices.
Valentine Ndlovu, our SHERQ Line Manager, led this initiative alongside her committed team, ensuring that everyone got involved and made an impact. Their effort turned the day into a celebration of unity, education, and proactive action.
At Grindrod Terminals, we see sustainability as a shared responsibility, not just a policy. World Environment Day 2025 reminded us how much positive change we can achieve when we come together with a common goal.
Together, we're not just cleaning up-we're stepping up.
