András Baka elected as Hungary's new President

The National Assembly elected legal scholar András Baka, the TISZA Party's nominee for President of Hungary, as Hungary's next President. Following his election, the new Head of State took the constitutional oath to uphold and enforce the Fundamental Law.

András Baka was born in Budapest in 1952. He graduated from the Faculty of Law of Eötvös Lóránd University in 1978, and conducted constitutional law research at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences until 1989.From 1991 to 2008, he served as the first Hungarian judge at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. From 2008 to 2009. he served as a Presiding Judge at the Budapest Court of Appeal, and from 2009 to 2011, until his early removal from office, he served as President of the Supreme Court, later as Presiding Judge of the Curia.

Pursuant to article 11. (6) of the Fundamental Law, where the term of office of the previous President of Hungary ends prematurely, the newly elected President takes office eight days after the election. Accordingly, András Baka will exercise the powers and duties of the President of Hungary since 19 August 2026.
