The Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Maria Tripodi, attended the inauguration ceremony in Lima of the President of the Republic of Peru, Keiko Sofia Fujimori Higuchi, representing Italy.
Italy's participation confirms the strength of bilateral relations with Peru, which are based on deep historical, cultural and economic ties. In recent years, there has been a revival of political dialogue and technical cooperation, with a particular focus on the defence sector and the fight against drug trafficking, not least in view of Italy's recognised expertise in these areas. Bilateral dialogue also continues through the Political Consultations Mechanism, which was reactivated in 2024 in Lima during Undersecretary Tripodi's mission and reached its fifth meeting in September 2025 with the Visit to Rome by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Félix Denegri Boza. On the economic front, trade with Peru reached EUR 1.686 billion in 2025 (+19.5 per cent), confirming the growing dynamism of the partnership, which is also supported by the presence of around 110 Italian companies in the country.
"I offered President Fujimori my warmest best wishes for her work, confident that the excellent relations between our countries will grow even stronger," said the Undersecretary on the sidelines of the inauguration ceremony.
